US controls Barbados 1-0 and moves on

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP/Yahoo)—After routing Barbados at home, the United States managed only a slim victory on the road.

Already ahead by eight goals in the home-and-home, total-goals series, the Americans advanced to the regional semifinals of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup with a listless 1-0 win victory Sunday.

Eddie Lewis scored in the 21st minute off a through ball from 19-year-old Freddy Adu, who started his first World Cup qualifier.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be a game of a lot of goals,” said Lewis, who served as U.S. captain. “Barbados came out with a good mentality, and we knew if we were just patient and controlled the game, that the goal would come.”

Lewis took the pass and put the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Alvin Rouse from 8 yards for his 10th goal in 80 international appearances.

The United States advanced on 9-0 aggregate following the big win at Carson, Calif., on June 15. The U.S. has outscored Barbados 20-0 in four meetings, all World Cup qualifiers, including two matches in 2000.

“This was an opportunity to use different players and it is important to get some young players experience. We had the confidence that we were strong enough defensively that we would hold together to get the win,” U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. “Barbados deserves a great deal of credit for the mentality that they brought to the pitch today. From the start they played aggressively and tried to push the game more.”

Seeking their sixth straight World Cup berth, the Americans will be in a semifinal group with Cuba, Guatemala, and Trinidad and Tobago or Bermuda. The top two teams advance to next year’s regional finals, which will produce three World Cup qualifiers and fourth team that goes to a playoff against the No. 5 nation in South America for another berth. US continue their preparations for Barbados, part 2

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (AP/Yahoo)—Carlos Bocanegra and his American teammates expect Barbados to be more energetic on their home turf. The U.S. team will not be complacent coming off an 8-0 rout of Barbardos in their World Cup qualifier in California on Sunday. The Americans know that Barbados will have learned from the blowout and will be hungry for a win.

"They’re going to try to jump out on top of us," Bocanegra said Wednesday. "But we’ll go out there and impose our game plan again and we’re go out there and do a professional job."

The United States basically clinched the home-and-home series in one game with their record-setting win in the opening qualifier for the 2010 World Cup. Total goals decide who takes a two-game set, but the U.S. team is not viewing this weekend’s match as a mere formality. "We still understand that it’s important to finish the job," said Bob Bradley, who is coaching the American team in a qualifier for the first time since replacing Bruce Arena.

The team practiced at a South Florida park Wednesday before an audience of about a dozen teenagers and an occasional children’s group. There will be roster changes before this weekend’s match, Bradley said, but he declined to elaborate. He released 10 players after the win over Barbados, including Brian Ching, Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan. All three had goals Sunday.

"The roster will change slightly," Bradley said. "We have some players that have had little injuries and have had long seasons, so we’ll adjust the roster and therefore it also provides opportunities for some different players. All of those things, hopefully, keep us fresh and sharp."

The Americans scored three times in the opening 20 minutes against Barbados and added five goals in the second half. The margin of victory was the largest in the 92-year history of the American team, which is ranked 21st in the world.

US blows out Barbados, 8-0

CARSON, Calif. (June 15, 2008) – The U.S. Men’s National Team opened 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying and took a commanding lead in first leg of their Second Round two-game series against Barbados this afternoon with a historic 8-0 victory at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The eight-goal win is the largest margin of victory ever in U.S. Men’s National Team history, and ties the record for the most goals scored by the U.S. in a match. The U.S. scored eight goals in a friendly against the Cayman Islands on Nov. 14, 1993, but also allowed a goal in the 8-1 victory.

Clint Dempsey started the rout when he tallied the quickest goal ever scored by the U.S. in World Cup qualifying, when he finished a fantastic service from Carlos Bocanegra only 53 seconds into the match. Michael Bradley and Brian Ching added goals in the first half before the U.S. wore down a tired Barbados defense in the second half to score five more goals, including three in the final nine minutes of the game. Dempsey and Ching both ended up with two-goal performances with goals in the second half, while an own goal and strikes from Landon Donovan and Eddie Johnson provided the U.S. with the record performance.

"It's good to get the whole thing underway," said U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bob Bradley. "We spent a lot of time thinking about just getting off on the right foot, and a goal early like that certainly is getting off on the right foot. From there, it's just an exercise of staying sharp, trying to play the right ball, the right timing, and finish off some of plays so we could have a margin. We were able to do that, so in those ways it was a definite success."

The second leg of the two-game series against Barbados will be played on Sunday, June 22 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN Classic and Galavision. Fans can also follow the match live on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker.

U.S. players and staff will travel to Miami on Monday to practice for the week before heading to Barbados on Friday for their final preparations.

In the Second Round stage of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying, an aggregate goal scoring system is used, which means Barbados would need to earn a similar eight-goal margin of victory in regulation play in the next match to force 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, penalties will decide who advances to the Semifinal Round.

The first record of the day was started by Bocanegra who drove a long ball from the left side of the midfield stripe into the right side of the penalty area, perfectly dropping the ball over the head of a Barbados defender and finding his former club teammate. Dempsey chested the ball down and then drove a low strike into the left corner past goalkeeper Alvin Rouse.

It took the U.S. a little less than 11 minutes to get their next goal, this effort not coming as cleanly as the record breaker. Right back Steve Cherundolo streaked down the sideline and swung a cross into the penalty area towards both Ching and Dempsey who were crashing in on goal. With a defender attempting to cover both U.S. players inside the six yard box, the ball bounced around before popping out for Ching to take a strike on goal, but Rouse made the save. The deflection landed in the middle of the penalty area where Bradley was able to pounce on the rebound and rip a crushing left-footed strike into the right side of the net to record a goal in his first-ever FIFA World Cup qualifier.

After just missing on the earlier sequence, Ching got some help from midfielder Pablo Mastroeni to earn his first goal since the 2007 Gold Cup. A short corner kick by Donovan to DaMarcus Beasley started the sequence, and Beasley then fed it back to Donovan who had run to the top of the penalty area. Donovan quickly slipped the ball to his right for a wide-open Mastroeni, and the two-time World Cup veteran unleashed a blast towards the mash of players in the box where it deflected off Ching and found the back of the net.

Mastroeni would leave the game in the 26th minute with a strained left glut muscle, being replaced by Freddy Adu.

All was quiet on the other end of the field for U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who started in place of usual first-choice goalkeeper Tim Howard. The Everton netminder had suffered a lower back strain in training on Friday and was not included in the 18-player game-day roster. Guzan didn’t have to make a single save in his fourth start for the full team and his first appearance in FIFA World Cup qualifying. Overall the U.S. only allowed Barbados to get off two shots, none in the second half.

After a long wait, Beasley ready to roll for US

CARSON, Calif. (AP/Yahoo)—Neither a career-threatening knee injury nor the ensuing long layoff could keep DaMarcus Beasley off the United States’ national team.

Seven months after tearing the posterior crucial ligament in his right knee, Beasley is preparing with his teammates for Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Barbados.

"It was quicker than what I expected, quicker than what the doctors expected," Beasley said of his recovery. "It has been a long time but I feel confident that I’m back. I’m excited."

Beasley, who played in the past two World Cups, hurt his knee on Nov. 27. Playing for Glasgow Rangers in the European Champions’ League, Beasley collided with VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Raphael Schafer.

"I knew as soon as it happened that I was going to be out for a while," the 26-year-old midfielder from Fort Wayne, Ind., said. "I was in a lot of pain. I couldn’t really feel my knee. It’s my first real injury so I didn’t know what to expect.

"The doctors told me that they thought it was my PCL. Then I knew it was a serious injury and that some people don’t come back from that."

Surgery to repair the ligament was only the beginning.

"I was in bed in Indiana for about 5 1/2 weeks," Beasley said. "With this injury, you have to let the bone heal."

In January, Beasley began therapy in Wilmington, Del. with James Hashimoto, one of the national team’s trainers. Sessions lasted twice a day, six days a week for 10 weeks.

"I wanted to get back on track as quick as possible," Beasley said. "It was tough. I got frustrated. I started yelling at ‘Hash’ because he wasn’t doing his job, I thought."

But on May 19, 5 1/2 months after the injury, Beasley returned to action with the Rangers as a substitute. Then on May 24, he rejoined the starting lineup and scored in a 3-2 victory over Queen of the South to win the Scottish F.A. Cup.

"That game was special for me," Beasley said. "It was my birthday and it was just amazing to walk into lunch and see my name on the starting 11."

Tim Howard stands tall as US draws 0-0 with Argentina

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP/Yahoo)—The frustration Tim Howard saw in the faces of Julio Cruz, Gabriel Heinze and the rest of the world’s top-ranked national team was enough to convince the goalkeeper that the United States is ready for World Cup qualifying.

Howard had four spectacular point-blank saves on Cruz, Landon Donovan made his 100th international appearance and the United States tied Argentina 0-0 on Sunday night, finishing a brutal three-game stretch of exhibition games against top 10 opponents.

"Tonight it was about standing up for ourselves, believing we could get a result," Howard said. "We stood up to the challenge. It wasn’t always pretty at times."

Still, the U.S. team failed to score a goal for the third straight game, following a 2-0 loss at England on May 28 and 1-0 defeat at Spain on Wednesday. The Americans had not been blanked in three straight games since 1998 and early 1999 against Yugoslavia, Australia and Bolivia.

Next up is their first qualifier for the 2010 World Cup, on Sunday against Barbados in Carson, Calif.

"We played to a high level tonight. We need to do that starting with Barbados," Howard said. "I feel confident we’ll get the job done. Tonight we made ourselves accountable. We did not back down. We stuck a foot in at every challenge and that’s what we are going to need to go forward."

The match, which ended in driving rain and lightning, drew 78,682, the fourth-largest crowd to watch a soccer game at Giants Stadium and the ninth-biggest to see the U.S. national team at home.

U.S. coach Bob Bradley refused to equate the tie with a win.

"It would have been a win if one of our shots went in," he quipped. "But do we feel good about the effort and playing at that level, yes we do."

Both teams ended short-handed. The United States lost Pablo Mastroeni to a second yellow card in the 71st minute and Argentine captain Javier Mascherano got two yellow cards in the 86th for a studs-up tackle on Donovan, the U.S. captain.

Donovan became the fourth-youngest player in the world to make 100 international appearances at 26 years, 3 months, 4 days. According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, the only younger players with 100 were South Korea’s Cha Bum-Kun, who was 24 when he reached the milestone in 1977, and Saudi Arabia’s Sami Al-Jaber and Mohammed Al-Deayea, who were each 25 in 1998.

"It’s nice to get it, get the weight off my shoulders," said Donovan, who missed the previous two matches with a groin injury. "It’s all special, the game, the big crowd, it’s Argentina."

Argentina has qualifiers at home against Ecuador on Sunday and at Brazil on June 18. While the Albiceleste had many more quality chances, the United States came within inches of scoring twice.

Clint Dempsey had a shot deflect off an Argentine player in the first half and just go wide of the left post. Oguchi Onyewu put a header off the crossbar in the opening minutes of the second half off a corner kick.

Howard put on a show in the first half, stopping Cruz four times from close, including three on breakaways.

The goalkeeper made a sliding leg save on Cruz in the fifth minute and then got to his feet quickly to punch away the rebound attempt. Howard made another sliding stop in the 28th minute after Lionel Messi made a great pass into space to send Cruz in alone.
