DC UNITED

After a high-flying start, DC United sputtered down the stretch in 2006 and 2007. A disappointing ends for MLS' most decorated franchise.

Former assistant Tom Soehn is not charged with bringing the only championship team DC has seen over the past decade to its championship ways. DC captured its 4th MLS Cup in 2004, bringing back its free flowing possession style that served it so well in the early years of the league.

The first 4 years of MLS was dominated by the Red and Black. After a shaky start to the inagural season, current United States Head Coach Bruce Arena turned DC into the most feared team in American soccer claiming MLS' first two championships, losing in the championship in Year 3, then reclaiming the MLS Cup in 99, a year after beating Brazillian Club Vasco da Gama for the right to be called the best team in the Americas. DC's roster has looked at tiimes like an all star squad and so many have appeared on various National Teams.

The leader of the squad had been Bolivian Marco "El Diablo" Etcheverry who with his compadre Jaime Moreno have been the driving force behind United's success. But DC has also featured, El Salvador's Raul Diaz Arce and a host of US National Teamers such as John Harkes, Eddie Pope, Jeff Agoos, Tony Saneh, Roy Lassiter, Richie Williams and Carlos Llamosa.

DC will continue to rely on Moreno and the oft injured Marcelo Gallardo for scoring and playmaking.

BROTHERS UNITED

While DC's Latin Players got a lot of publicity, Black players have made incredible contributions to this squad through the efforts of players like Tony Sanneh who turned his play into a contract with Hertha Berlin in the German Bundesliga, Roy Lassiter who scored over 35 goals in two seasons, including that memorable bicycle kick in Game 3 of the 99 Eastern Conference final, Earnie Stewart who served a 2 year stint with DC and long time defender Eddie Pope. Brazillian striker Luicano Emilio steps into the spotlight to make his mark in DC lore.
