PERU

Usually a middle of the pack side in South America, Peru has had some moments of glory on the international.

The 1970 side, coached by Brazillian great, Didi, made a startling run to the quarterfinals, employing some of the great "Jogo Bonito" that evoked comparisons to the great Brazllian sides of the past and of the present.

Unfortunately, for the Peruvians they ran up against perhaps the greatest team of all time, the Brazillian side of 1970 and their run ended.

Peru's club sides have had decent international success in the Copa Libertadores. Clubs like Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal inspire huge passion from their Peruvian followers.

The Peruvians have played in two other World Cups and players like Julio Cesar Uribe and currently Norberto Solano have continued the tradition of Peruvian football started in early part of the 20th century.

BLACKS IN PERUVIAN FOOTBALL

Peruvian soccer has a long tradition in fielding Black players. Club side Alianza Lima was one of the first South American sides that fetured Black players. Alejandro Villanueva and José María Lavalle were early idols in Peru. According the Encarta Africana, "Many players from Alianza were finally chosen to play in the national selection, yet later resigned in protest over preferential treatment given to the team's nonblack players in 1929."

However, by far the best known Black Peruvian player, is one of South America's greatest players, Teofilo Cubillas. He appeared in 3 World Cups, scoring 10 goals and led the famous 1970 run to the quarterfinals. He finished his international career as the all time leading scorer for Peru with 47 goals from the midfield position and is known as the finest player Peru has produced. He currently works as a TV analyst both in the US and Peru and chairs a soccer camp.
