Atalante tops Pumas to win 2007 Apertura

CANCUN, Mexico (AP/Yahoo) -- Clemente Ovalle scored with 5 minutes left to give Atlante a 2-1 victory over UNAM Pumas and the Mexican Apertura league title Sunday.

Ovalle's shot in the 85th minute gave the Cancun-based Atlante team the third championship in its history and first in 14 years.

Venezuelan Giancarlo Maldonao gave Atlante the lead in the 59th minute, while Ismael Iniguez equalized for Pumas 10 minutes later.

"Thanks to God, thanks to the work that has been and one also has to recognize Pumas, who were a rival who deserved better, but only one team can be the champion," said Atlante coach Jose Guadalupe Cruz, who won the championship with Atlante in 1992-93.
