Corinthians facing the drop after another loss

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 8 (Reuters/Yahoo) - Defending champions Corinthians dropped back into the Brazilian championship relegation zone when they lost 3-1 at Goias on Sunday.

Corinthians, facing a team led by their former coach Geninho who resigned in August, slipped below Ponte Preta, who beat Juventude 3-1 in their first game under new coach Wanderley Paiva.

At the top, leaders Sao Paulo came from behind to win 2-1 at Fluminense go to seven points clear while Santos beat Gremio 1-0 to leapfrog their opponents and move into second place.

Goias striker Souza, the championship's leading scorer, put his side ahead in the 18th minute by converting a controversial penalty to take his tally to fifteen goals.

Amoroso headed Corinthians level in the 28th minute but the visitors fell apart after defender Betao was sent off early in the second half for a second bookable offence.

Welliton put Goias back in front with a shot on the turn from the edge of the area and then set up the third for Nonato, who scored despite scuffing his shot.

Corinthians, who have 32 points from 28 games, dropped to 17th in the 20-team table, one point behind Ponte Preta. The bottom four go down.

RELEGATION UNTHINKABLE

Relegation is still considered almost unthinkable for Corinthians, one of Brazil's biggest clubs who last year signed a controversial multi-million dollar partnership deal with London-based Media Sport Investments.
