Oranje crushed: Netherlands crash back to earth after being bounced by Russia, 3-1

BASEL, Switzerland (AP/Yahoo)—Russia had the right Dutch coach. And the better team.

The long shot Russians, led by coach Guus Hiddink, scored two goals in extra time Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the European Championship with a 3-1 upset win over the Netherlands.

It was a sweet victory for Hiddink, who enhanced his reputation of getting lesser known teams far in tournaments. The coach guided South Korea to the 2002 World Cup semifinals, and he took Australia to the second round of the 2006 World Cup.

"The better Dutchman, our coach, won today," said Andrei Arshavin, who set up the winning goal and scored the clincher in extra time.

Dimitry Torbinski and Arshavin scored within five minutes of each other in the second half of extra time. Roman Pavlyuchenko also scored for Russia, while Ruud van Nistelrooy scored for the Dutch in the 86th.

The Russians showed more pace and stamina through the final 75 minutes, particularly in the 30-minute overtime. Torbinski, a substitute, surged toward the far post in the 112th minute and barely deflected a deep cross from Arshavin.

Arshavin shot through the legs of Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar for the final goal in the 116th. By then, the Netherlands players were spent.

"Physically, you would say we are in more shape than the Russians," Netherlands coach Marco van Basten said. "We didn’t see that today and it was a pity."

Van Nistelrooy had temporarily saved the Dutch late in the match, proving no one is more lethal from close range. On a free kick by Rafael van der Vaart, he got open and scored with a diving header at the far post.

The Netherlands outscored first-round opponents 9-1 in winning Group C.

But Van Basten knew who was superior Saturday night.

"They were really a good squad today, better than we were," he said. "The way they play is very good. They have also good strikers, good defenders. I think they are a good possibility (to win the championship)."

Edwin Van der Saar suffers crushing defeat in last national time apperance

BASEL, June 21 (Reuters/Yahoo) - Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar said he was ending his international career with the pain of defeat after they lost 3-1 to Russia in Saturday’s Euro 2008 quarter-final.

The 37-year-old, who had announced that his career with the national team would end after Euro 2008, also said he would play only one more season with European champions Manchester United.

"Until this match, it all was nice and we received a lot of international praise, but we could not take that extra step towards the semi-final and final—and that hurts," Van der Sar told reporters after their extra-time defeat.

Capped 128 times for his country, his career was finally ended by goals from Russia substitute Dmitry Torbinsky and man of the match Andrei Arshavin, who threaded Russia’s third between the Dutchman’s legs from close range.

The man who launched his international career in 1995 as Netherlands coach at the time, Guus Hiddink, was also the one who brought it to an end on Saturday as manager of a Russia side that were just too good for the Dutch.

"The good feeling just was not present today," Van der Sar said. "In the first half they really put us under pressure.

"In extra time I really had the idea that we could go through if we managed to get into the penalty shootout."

Netherlands wrap up Group of Death with 2-0 win over Romania

BERN, Switzerland (AP/Yahoo)—Even a makeshift Dutch lineup was too much for Romania, and good enough to keep the Netherlands perfect at the European Championship.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar helped the Dutch backups send Romania out of the European Championship on Tuesday with a 2-0 win, a result which allowed Italy to join the Dutch in the quarterfinals.

Huntelaar, the replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy, killed off much of the suspense hanging over the game by tapping in a cross from Ibrahim Afellay in the 54th minute. Robin van Persie added the other in the 87th with a strong solo effort on left wing against a strangely listless Romania, playing its biggest game in eight years.

"This says a lot. This is not a ‘B’ team," said Van Persie, one of the few regulars to play. "We have one group, 23 players. We are as good as equals."

Romania never pushed forward with any passion or aggression and depended far too much on a few flashes of brilliance from striker Adrian Mutu. The Dutch proved their second-string lineup is sound and solid, if not sparkling and spectacular, and also helped the Italians advance. Italy beat France 2-0 in their Group C match, giving it four points for second behind the perfect Dutch.

"As far as the mentality, we should have been better than the Dutch today and that was not the case. Maybe we were a little bit tired," Romania coach Victor Piturca said. "Our great adventure is now over.

"Playing in such a group with fantastic teams and not losing the first two matches against the (runner-up) world champions and the world champions has been an achievement for our team."

Dutch storm past France into the quarterfinals with 4-1 win

BERNE (Reuters/Yahoo) - The dazzling Dutch qualified for the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 with a 4-1 destruction of France that left the World Cup runners-up hovering over the tournament trapdoor on Friday.

Four days after crushing world champions Italy 3-0, Marco van Basten’s side ripped the French apart with another superb performance based on their counter-attacking game.

Dirk Kuyt, Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder scored for Netherlands, with Thierry Henry replying as France slid to their heaviest defeat in a major tournament finals since losing 5-2 to Brazil at the 1958 World Cup.

The Dutch clinched first place in Group C with six points, four ahead of Romania. France and Italy, who meet in Zurich on Tuesday, have a point apiece with one game left.

"We are very happy to have beaten the world champions and the World Cup finalists in the same week," said Van Basten. "We started well but then we were too passive under French pressure towards the end of the first half.

"In the second we were dangerous even under French pressure. (Substitutes) Robben and Van Persie helped us do that."

Kuyt opened the scoring with a powerful header in the ninth minute following a Rafael van der Vaart corner and poor marking by the defense.

CHASING DEFENDERS

The second goal after 59 minutes capped a swift counter attack involving Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robben who raced away from the chasing defenders before crossing low and hard for Van Persie, who had only been on the field for four minutes, to volley in.

Henry, France’s all-time leading scorer, had been guilty of the miss of the match five minutes earlier when he lobbed way over the bar with only Edwin van der Sar to beat.

But he pulled one back after 71 minutes with his 45th goal for France in his 101st international.

Arjen Robben fit for France

LAUSANNE, June 12 (Reuters/Yahoo) - Dutch winger Arjen Robben has recovered from a groin injury and is fit to face France in their Group C game at Euro 2008, coach Marco van Basten said on Thursday.

The injury-prone midfielder missed the Netherlands’ emphatic 3-0 victory over world champions Italy on Monday and had been considered a doubt for Friday’s game, also in Berne.

"Arjen joined today’s group training without any problem, so he is fit for the match against France," Van Basten told a news conference at the Stade de Suisse.

"We are pleased with the good (work) our medical staff have done."

As for whether he should change a side who had thrashed the World Cup holders, he said: "It is tough if you consider changing a winning team, but it is a luxury problem.

"And I hope to have more problems like that during this tournament."

The Netherlands will qualify for the quarter-finals if they beat a sluggish France side who were held to a goalless draw by Romania on Monday in Zurich.

ORANJE CRUSH: Holland blows out Italy to open Euro 2008

BERNE (AFP/Yahoo) - Holland's 30-year wait for a victory over Italy ended in glorious fashion here on Monday as Marco van Basten's side rampaged their way to a 3-0 defeat of the world champions.

A goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy that looked offside may have kickstarted the rout but there was no doubting that the Dutch, superior in every area, fully deserved a victory that was completed by Wesley Sneijder's close-range strike and a late breakaway goal by the outstanding Gio van Bronckhorst.

"I'm very happy and proud," said van Basten. "To beat the world champions playing football to the last minute—it was for us a very nice game and also a historical game. We have never beaten Italy by three goals.

"If you think we were without players like Arjen Robben and Ryan Babel, the players reacted in a wonderful way. They fought like a team and if the spirit is like it was tonight, with all the quality we have, we can have nice dreams."

Uncharacteristically shaky in defence, the Italians were given a painful reminder of the importance of their World Cup captain Fabio Cannavaro, who was ruled out of the tournament after suffering an ankle injury in training last week.

Marco Materazzi took Cannavaro's place in the centre of defence but filling the former world player of the year's boots was to prove beyond the Inter Milan veteran, who was substituted ten minutes into the second half.

Italian coach Roberto Donadoni said his men had to move on and look forward.

"The game started badly for us and ended up worse but it is already history.

"We made mistakes and paid for them but now we have to look forward to the Romania game, which is going to be critical now," Donadoni said.

The Dutch themselves were exultant.

"It's a great start for us. We must keep going now," said striker Dirk Kuyt.

"We've given everything we've got and it's a great result for us. But it's the first match and there's another two tough matches to come."

Regarding the controversial first goal, Kuyt told ITV television: "We were waiting for the flag but it didn't come."

The chairman of Austria's refereeing commission Gerhard Kapl insisted afterwards that Swedish referee Peter Frojdfeldt was "100 percent correct" to award the goal, saying defender Christian Panucci, injured moments earlier and behind the goalline as Van Nistelrooy fired home, played the forward onside.

The first clear indication of the extent to which the Italians would miss Cannavaro came after quarter of an hour, when van Nistelrooy got in behind Materazzi only to be let down by a heavy first touch as he attempted to go round Buffon.

Materazzi made partial amends by heading Sneijder's free-kick from the left over his own bar. But there was no such let-off for the Italians when Rafael van der Vart swung in a similar delivery from the opposite flank minutes later.

Buffon could only the palm the ball away and when the ball was rolled back to Sneijder the midfielder unleashed a fierce low drive that van Nistelrooy turned into the net from four yards out.

Italy's ensuing protests only led to a yellow card for Luca Toni.

Five minutes later the Italians found themselves in deeper trouble after a move that suggests Total Football is alive and well in the Netherlands.

Having cleared Andrea Pirlo's corner off his own line, van Bronckhorst immediately sprinted forward to take possession once more in the acres of space that had opened up down the left.

The Barcelona defender's cross was knocked down by Kuyt from beyond the back post and Sneijder, having stolen a yard on Materazzi, lashed the bouncing ball in between Buffon's left glove and the near post.

The world champions could offer little in response, their one real moment of menace before the break coming when Antonio di Natale's volley bounced through the legs of Khalid Boulahrouz with the result that Edwin van der Sar needed two attempts to smother the ball.

Van Nistelrooy should have extended the Dutch lead a minute before the break after Sneijder's superb pass once again put him in behind Materazzi.

From just inside the box, the striker pushed his shot towards the bottom corner only to see it ricocheted off Buffon's leg and up over the bar.

Arjen Robben injured, to sit opener

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June 7 (Reuters/Yahoo) - Dutch winger Arjen Robben will miss Netherlands’ opening Euro 2008 Group C match with Italy on Monday after picking up a groin injury during Saturday’s training, the Dutch FA (KNVB) said.

"First, it is an enormous disappointment for Arjen (Robben) but also a big loss for the team especially because we lost Ryan Babel last week for the same position in the team," coach Marco van Basten was quoted in a statement.

"Together with the medical staff, Arjen now will try to recover and we hope that he can still be valuable in the short term for the team."

Babel out for Euros

AMSTERDAM: Forward Ryan Babel has been ruled out of the Dutch squad for Euro 2008 after suffering an ankle injury in training on Saturday, the Dutch FA (KNVB) said in a statement.

It said coach Marco van Basten had called up Khalid Boulahrouz to replace the injured winger.

Van Basten dropped the Sevilla defender earlier this week when he named his final squad for the Euro Finals.

Babel tore ankle ligaments during training in the Dutch village of Hoenderloo.
