Jones, Yorke send Trinis into the Hex: T&T 3, Cuba 0

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP/Yahoo)—A pair of goals by Kenwyne Jones and Dwight Yorke in a two-minute span in the second half helped Trinidad to a 3-0 win over Cuba on Wednesday night and a place in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Keon Daniel added a late goal for Trinidad, which needed only one point to advance.

On a heavy surface soaked by two days of torrential rain, Trinidad almost took a second-minute lead when Cuban defender Jenier Molina slipped and gave up possession. Russell Latapy’s shot was wide and the game remained scoreless.

Cuba had a chance in the 24th minute when Mario Leonard’s drive beat goalkeeper Clayton Ince only to hit the inside of the post. Roberto Balmaseda failed to convert the rebound.

Jones missed a number of opportunities before Yorke’s pass put him through one on one with Cuban keeper Danis Quintero Chevans in the 67th minute. The Sunderland striker slotted the ball beneath Chevans to send the home fans in Hasely Crawford Stadium into a roar.

Yorke, Latapy slay the ghost of 1989- T&T 2, USA 1

Dwight Yorke converted a 79th-minute penalty to give Trinidad & Tobago a 2:1 victory over the United States on Wednesday, moving it to the brink of the the final round of World Cup qualifying.

It was the Soca Warriors’ first victory over the USA in 12 tries in World Cup qualifying, and ended the Stars & Stripes’ six-game winning streak in their bid to reach the 2010 finals in South Africa.

Only one game remains in the second round of qualifying. Trinidad will be at home against Cuba on 19 November while Guatemala will have to travel to face the USA.

Yorke converted after Trinidad was awarded the penalty when Jozy Altidore dragged down Makan Hislop by grabbing his shirt on a corner kick. Forty-year-old Russell Latapy gave Trinidad the lead with his 29th career goal in the 61st minute. Latapy, who has played for Falkirk in Scotland since 2003, scored after Trinidad had more of the possession and chances.

Chris Birchall sent the ball down the right to Carlos Edwards, who chipped it back to the top of the area. Latapy stuck the volley with his left foot, hitting the left post, but the ball rebounded off the back of diving goalkeeper Brad Guzan and deflected back into the goal.

Yorke: I want all three points against the US

Trinidad and Tobago's most accomplished footballer, Dwight Yorke, yesterday set sights on another piece of sporting history as he vowed to help the "Soca Warriors" achieve their first victory over the United States in a senior competitive fixture.

A point against the US in tomorrow's 2010 World Cup qualifier could be vital to the Warriors' ambitions of progressing to the final CONCACAF qualifying round. But Yorke wants all three points at stake at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain and an unprecedented win against a familiar foe.

"We know the history about them," said Yorke, who played in the infamous November 19 qualifier against the US at the same venue 19 years ago. "They always seem to get the better of us, but I think the tables are turning."

Yorke was absent, last month, when the Warriors fell 3-0 to the US in Chicago, but the North Americans travelled with a radically different squad for their next fixture. Coach Bob Bradley left nine regular players out of his team to face Trinidad and Tobago.

But the Warriors captain and Sunderland ace does not intend to be distracted by Bradley's tinkering.

"We would be silly to underestimate the US," said the former Manchester United stand-out. "They are in a position to make those kind of changes, but we have to eradicate that from our minds.

"Our main aim is to try and get three points no matter what they put in front of us."

Yorke, 36, remained on the Hasely Crawford field yesterday evening after most of his teammates retreated to the dressing room following their work-out. He juggled the ball and traded some long passes with teammate and national record goal-scorer, Stern John.

Yorke praised the present squad but was quick to point out the influence of the more experienced players like Russell Latapy, Dennis Lawrence, John and himself in extracting the right approach from their younger colleagues.

On cue, another player from the 2006 qualifying campaign, Wrexham utility player Silvio Spann, landed at Piarco International Airport yesterday evening and can be a surprise addition tomorrow.

Spann, 27, has 34 international caps, although he has not represented his country since head coach Francisco Maturana's first game at the helm against Guadeloupe in February.

Another veteran happy to put in a shift is 36-year-old Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince, who set a T&T record for clean sheets in World Cup qualifying action on Saturday.

Ince's shut-out away to Guatemala was his tenth for Trinidad and Tobago, which is one more than present goalkeeper coach and former stand-out Michael Maurice and six more than retired custodians Shaka Hislop and Kelvin Barclay.

"It means a lot to me," said Ince, who was excluded since the country's opening World Cup qualifying 2-1 loss to Bermuda in June. "As a goalkeeper, the most important thing is a clean sheet I don't know what the future holds for me as in the past I lost my place to Shaka Hislop and Kelvin Jack.

Yorke: Tables are turning

Warriors gain big point on the road

T&T came away with a valuable point in a courageous 0-0 draw with Guatemala on Saturday night to keep its chances of securing a spot in the CONCACAF final round very much alive.

Playing before a partisan home crowd at the Estadio Mateo Flores, skipper Dwight Yorke and his men, forced to play with 10 men after defender Cyd Gray way given marching orders for a second bookable offense in the 39th minute, held on with a gritty display which saw them almost snatching a late winner when a Yorke free kick came back off the near left post.

Upon arrival at the venue some 90 minutes before kick off, the stadium was almost entirely filled by a vocal Guatemalan crowd which jeered Yorke and company as they walked out on the pitch to get an early feel of the expected intimidating atmosphere.

T&T had a bright first half, holding off the hosts for long periods and should have gone ahead had Carlos Edwards and Jason Scotland done better with their chances.

Scotland enjoyed a solid game overall and Edwards was a force in the right defensive position.

Veteran midfielder Russell Latapy had to be sacrificed at the break following Gray’s sending off, allowing Clyde Leon to enter in a more defensive role with Cornell Glen joining Scotland up front.

Francisco Maturana said after the match that Latapy was willing to play further time but he had no choice but to introduce the defensive midfielder due to T&T then being a player short.

Chris Birchall was a workhorse throughout and had two decent tries at goal, one in the first half which was blocked and another in the second half which flew over bar.

Goalkeeper Clayton Ince kept it even with some timely saves well supported by more tidy work by Keyeno Thomas, Dennis Lawrence and Avery John.

The players and technical staff, feeling the value of the point, embraced each other at half pitch. Russell Latapy jogged off with clenched fists in the air as the T&T team was cheered off the field by the section of the Guatemalan crowd above the players tunnel.

The "Soca Warriors” will host USA on Wednesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Anthony Wolf, on two yellow cards, and Gray will miss that encounter.

T&T and Guatemala both have five points from four matches with Guatemala having a better goal difference. Both countries have to play the United States and winless Cuba.

While T&T will be enjoying home advantage against USA and Cuba (November 19), the Guatemalans will have to meet the Americans and Cubans away from home.
