TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

music: Big Sam-Soca Posse

Soccer has been played in this Caribbean Nation since the infancy of the 20th century but it was mainly concentrated in the urban areas of the north and south as the infrastructure of the times prevented a concentrated effort to spread the game throughout the island. The fact that T&T was still a British colony meant that it also had to battle against cricket for popularity.

Following independence from Britian, the TTFA joined FIFA and began develop the game in a more thorough fashion, losing the final qualifying spot to Haiti for the 1974 World Cup and again to the United States for the 1990 Cup. By the 80's soccer became the sport of choice which culminated in T&T's attempt to reach the 1990 World Cup.

The 90's were kind internationally to the Soca Warriors as they have become known. They won 6 Shell Caribbean Cups in addition to the one they captured in 1989 and have found a similar resurgence in all of CONCACAF.

However, few things will top the euphoria felt in these parts when the twin islands qualified for the 2006 World Cup. The future of football is indeed bright for Trinidad and Tobago.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Ususally you cannot have any conversation about Trinidad and Tobago football without talking about the "Duke" Dwight Yorke who has found international acclaim as a member of England's famed Manchester United and Captain Russel Latapy of Hibernan. However their inability to produce had left TNT floundering, opening the door for players like Marvin Andrews, Carlos Edwards formerly of the San Jose Earthquakes and Arnold Dwarika before they came back to lead TnT to Germany. Stern John who had a spell at Columbus Crew of MLS before going to Nottingham Forest in England will now leads the attack. Ansil Elcock was a stalwart on the backline for years but Dennis Lawrence is the leader in the back. Don't sleep on Angus Eve either.

Bottom line:
Trinidad and Tobago are one of the top sides in the Caribbean but will hope to continue their progression now that they've advanced to the World Cup.
