Barbados press hard but fall 1-0, ending qualifying run

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS (TICKER/Yahoo) —Eddie Lewis scored in the first half as the United States advanced to the regional semifinals of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup on Sunday with an uninspiring 1-0 triumph over Barbados.

Ranked just 121st in the world, Barbados nearly tied the game in the 58th minute when Emerson Boyce’s header beat Brad Guzman before glancing off the crossbar. In the 86th minute, John Parris put the ball past Boyce but the goal was nullified on an offsides call on Mark McCammon.

Despite changing seven starters from the first leg, the U.S. managed to blank Barbados for the fourth time in as many meetings. The U.S. has outscored the Caribbean island nation by a lopsided 20-0 margin all-time.

Barbados overwhelmed in USA

IT WASN'T PRETTY!

In fact, it was downright ugly, if you were a Barbadian supporter. s

Barbados received a sound 8-0 thrashing yesterday from the United States in their World Cup 2010 qualifier at the Home Depot Centre in Carson, California.

Both teams each started with the standard 11 players, but such was the dominance and ball possession of the United States, that at times one was almost moved to make a head count of the number of Americans on the field.

From as early as the 53rd second, striker Clint Dempsey beat goalkeeper Alvin Rouse after Barbados' defence fell asleep. That was the start of a deluge of goals.

Dempsey added a second-half goal [63rd minute] for the Americans, who scored three times in the first half and five times in the second.

Barbados captain Norman Forde was substituted in the 72nd minute of the game after having little impact in the midfield. It was a calculated effort by the Americans that shut down Forde, whom they had indicated days before the game would be one of their main targets.

The Bajan squad had been bolstered by the addition of nine overseas-based players but they all largely proved ineffectual.

For Barbados the defeat was even more humiliating than their 2000 World Cup campaign when they were beaten 7-0 and 4-0 by the Americans.

Barbados head to US with 9 overseas players

BARBADOS will go into Sunday's important World Cup qualifier against the United States in California with nine overseas-based professionals at their disposal.

In a release yesterday, the Barbados Football Association (BFA) named a 19-man squad which they hope will turn around recent disappointing results where Barbados lost friendlies against both Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda.

The overseas-based players selected are Daryl Ferguson of Real Maryland Monarch of the United States, Marcel McKie of St Albans City FC, Paul Ifill of Crystal Palace, Mark McCammon of Doncaster Rovers, Johnathan Forte of Scunthorpe United, Rommell Burgess of Real Madrid New Hampshire in the United States, Johnathan Nurse of Dagenham & Redbridge in Britain, Alvin Rouse of Galway United in Ireland and Mile Jones.

Jones was previously on the books of English club Haynes and Yeading, but had a trial last month with the L A Galaxy, the team of England's David Beckham, and is looking to ply his trade in the United States.

The other members of the squad are captain Norman Forde, Rommell Brathwaite, John Parris and Brian Neblett, all of Notre Dame, Barbados Defence Force's Gregg Belle, Riverre Williams and Barry Skeete, Youth Milan's Adrian Chase, Weymouth Wales' Malcolm Marshall and Technico's Dyson James.

The squad flew out for the United States yesterday.

Got some Bajan in you? Barbdos FA wants you!

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) -- Desperate to qualify for its first World Cup, Barbados is advertising in Europe and North America for players to compete for the small Caribbean island.

The former British colony, ranked 142 out of 201 countries by FIFA, is allowed only to recruit first-generation Barbadians born overseas. But Ronald Jones, president of the Barbados Football Association, said officials have requested permission to pursue the second generation as well.

"If we want to take football to the next level, we need to have an ability to reach into wherever Barbadians are," Jones said.

The recruitment campaign has generated strong interest and the Bajan Braves could include at least 13 foreign-born players on their 25-member roster. The association has bought newspaper advertisements in the U.S., Germany, Italy and England.

"Give Barbados a chance," a posting on the association Web site said. "Are you Barbadian by birth, nationality or descent? Let us check it out for you."

A similar effort in 2002 helped Barbados field a team that reached the 2002 CONCACAF semifinals, said Charles Husbands, the association's senior assistant secretary
