ZAMBIA

While the world was already aware of Cameroon and would be introduced to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, the continent was buzzing about the talent coming out of nation of Zambia.

Chipolopolo (the Bullets) as they are known were putting together upsets of established African sides like Ghana, Cameroon and South Africa. Kalusha Bwalya was the symbol of the potential of this new rising power that posted several top 3 finishes in the Nations Cup.

In 1993, it literally came crashing down.

While on their way to a World Cup qualifier, the plane carrying the Zambian National Team crashed. All were lost except for Bwalya who was not on board.

Bwalya led a group of young players to the brink of the 1994 WC only to come up just short. The National Team has never truly threatened again as a major force. Following the privatisation of many of the country's copper mines, the sponsors of many of Zambia's top clubs and the retirement of the former African player of the Year, Zambian football has been in a steady decline.

THE CURRENT SQUAD

With Bwalya retired and now coaching the National side (and making the odd appearance), many Zambians are looking to Gift Kampamba who leads the attack in the midfield.

Bottom line: Right now, Zambia's football is in the middle of the pack but the future is bright for this country which has and will continue to produce talented players.
