TUNISIA

Tunisia kept alive the proud tradition of North African football by making its 2nd straight appearance at the World Cup in Japan and Korea and with the recent capture of its first international title.

Though Egypt and Zaire had made World Cup appearances before the North African side, Tunisia holds the distinction as being the first African team to win a game at the group stage, beating Mexico 3-1 at the 1978 tournament held in Argentina.

Tunisian soccer is more known, however, for its strong club sides. Teams like Esperance and Club Africain of Tunis have always fielded sides that do extremely well in African club competitions such as the Champions League and the Cup Winners Cup.

However, even with great players like Adel Sellimi and GK Chokri El-Ouer, another member of club side Esperance, it took until they hosted the 2004 African Cup of Nations for the senior team to make the same impact in Africa and internationally.

Tunisia, however is one of Africa's more consistent sides and continued National Team success appears to be on its way.

THE CURRENT SQUAD

Tunisia will look to the scoring of Ziad Jaziri & the playmaking of Slim Benachour to lead the Eagles of Carthage over the next few years.
