SENEGAL

Senegal came into the international football consciousness just a few summers ago and will be looking to recapture that form again.

Senegal's Lions of Teranga made a stunning debut at the 2002 World Cup, opening up with a win against defending European and World Champions France. The followed that with a wild 3-3 tie against Uruguay that barely got them into the second round where they beat Sweden in the Round of 16 before falling to Turkey in OT. But in matching the run of 1990 Cameroon side, they etched their names in World Cup history.

However a disappointing display at the 2004 ACN let them know that they cannot sneak up on anyone again.

Before the tournament when one spoke of Senegalese football the names Jules Bocande and Saar Boubacar came to mind. Both of these player had solid careers in Europe and laid the groud work for todays stars through. Bocande, in fact was an assistant coach with the World Cup side.

THE CURRENT SQUAD

French Coach Bruno Metsu stocked his starting lineup with players from French club sides and the move paid off. The revelation of the Qualifiers was, without a doubt, El Hadji Diouf (Bolton) and his play did not disappoint in the main tournament. Equally impressive was Ferdinand Coly the right back he gave no quarter on his side. Hadji's strike partner Henry Camara also showed himself a clutch performer, scoring the game winner against Sweden. The midfield is orchestrated by Khaliou Fadiga.

play at times but talent of the man dubbed
the "Serial Killer" for his deadly ability
in front of goal cannot be denied. (BBC) (lesgainde.tripod.com/leslionsdusenegal)

The forwards grab most of the headlines
but the play of Ferdinand Coly (l) in the back
helped Senegal reach the World Cup quarterfinals.

Bottom line: Senegal served notice to the Nigerias and Cameroons that they are ready to challenge them for continental honors.
