LIBERIA
music: Michael Jackson-Liberian Girl

Let us be serious.

When it comes to talking soccer in the land founded by former slaves who returned to Africa (hence the similarity to the US flag and the name of its capital, Monrovia) there is one name that is synonomous with the term, Liberian soccer:

George Weah

The 1995 African, European and World player of the Year has done more for Liberian soccer than is humanly imaginable.

Weah rose from a poor childhood, where he played the world's game with no shoes and a sock for a ball, to star at Olympic Marseille and then at AC Milan where he captured the world's attention.

However it is what he has done for his country that makes him so special. He has personally bankrolled the team, in many instances providing uniforms and cleats and transportation. For this he earned the gratitude of his countrymen and teammates, although not from former President Charles Taylor, whose political opponent Weah was very close to. When one considers the tenuous political situation that has gone in the country for some time, Weah's ability to use football help ease the country's mind and present a positive view of the land is special indeed.

As Technical Director, Weah led the Lone Stars on a magical run through 2002 World Cup qualifying only to see a home loss to Ghana late in the process sabotage their hopes of reaching the World Cup.

Weah has finally retired from the Lone Star and will soon move to New York. But rest assured every player who ever dons the red and white striped kit of the Liberian Lone Stars owe many thanks to the man they call King George.

THE CURRENT SQUAD

Now that King George has exited stage left, it will be left to players like players like talented Jimmy Dixon and striker to fill the void.

Bottom line: The rate at which Liberia continues to improve its fortunes in life after Weah will be the determining factor if the Lone Star can become one of Africa's top teams.
