GHANA

By qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, the Black Stars of Ghana erased the one blot on their intenational resume.

The country that brought us Tony Yeboah, a legend in Germany for his long career there, and Abedi Pele, considered one of the best African players of all time, had yet to qualify for the World Cup and though they have 4 Nations Cups, the last was back in 1982.

By advancing out of a tough group to gain the second round of the 2006 World Cup they served notice that Ghana was here to stay.

Where Ghana has enjoyed most of their international success has been on the youth level. The Satellites have twice finished 2nd in the U-20s and have historically been a side to reckon with. It is the sucess here that has confounded followers of Ghanian football when looking at the relative lack of achievement by the senior side.

On the domestic side of things, Ghana is beginning to make its mark on the continent as well. Accra-based outfit, Hearts of Oak signaled the arrival of Ghanaian club football when it took the African Champions League title in 2000.
