EGYPT
Music: Amr Diab-Nour El Ain

The grandfather of African football.

Not only is the ancient land the seat of the Confederation of African Football, but it is also the first African Nation to compete in the World Cup (1934) and winner of the first two African Cup of Nations (1957 & 59).

Though the national team has had moderate success on the continent recently, where the dominance in Egyptian football has truly been felt is with its club sides. Cairo based sides Zamalek and bitter rivals Al-Ahly, the African club of the 20th century, have been major players in the African Champions League. However similar to other North African sides, the Pharohs have been unable to duplicate the club dominance in terms of qualifying for the World Cup.

The lack of World Cup success hasn't been for lack of talent. Hossam and his twin brother, Ibrahim have long been celebrated for the great players that they are. However Hani Razni is probably the most sucessful, having a long career in Europe, espeically Germany with clubs Werder Bremen and Kaiserslauten.

He has over 150 caps for Egypt,
yet because he has spent most
his career with Al-Ahly and Zamalek
Hossam Hassan is relatively
unknown outside the continent. (BBC)

THE CURRENT SQUAD

Egypt barely missed on the 2002 World Cup but the future may be looking up. All eyes are on young, talented but sometimes troubled Ahmed "Mido" Hossam who now looks to replace the departed Hossam brothers as Egypt's top footballer.

Bottom line: The 2006 African Nations Cup shows that Egypt is not so far removed from its place as one of Africa's top teams but the new generation must step up the challenge of bringing the side to the World Cup.
