Rene Higuita, the flamboyant Colombian goalkeeper nicknamed "El Loco" was making one of his trademark runs with the ball at his feet. He was about 20 yards from goal when out of nowhere came the ageless wonder, Roger Milla. Milla stripped the suprised Higuita raced to the goal and scored the eventual game winner. He went to the corner flag, did a dance to honor the continent and in Cameroon, Africa had its first World Cup quarterfinalist. It was 1990 and African football was officially on the map.

The Indomitable Lions, as they are called, have always been one of the continent's most talented and experienced sides. Their 1990 run captured the world's imagination and observers say that this was the first African team not to be in awe of the great European and South American sides they faced.

At the center of it all was the African player of the century, Roger Milla. At 38, he inspired his compatriots at the 1990 World Cup and showed great skill and showmanship (most notably for his African inspired goal celebrations). 4 years later he scored a couple of goals to become the oldest player ever to score at a World Cup.

Milla was by no means alone. Other top players included Francois Omam-Biyik and Thomas N'Kono. All of African football owe these men thanks for bringing the international spotlight to Africa.

THE CURRENT SQUAD

Cameroon is looking to regain their footing at the top of African football after being dethroned as African champions and failing to qualify for the World Cup. The Indomitable Lions will continue to rely on Samuel Eto'o but they have several seasoned veterans who also play club football in Europe.

Bottom line: The Indomitable Lions are still hurting from not making the 2006 World Cup but they'll be back
