ANGOLA

Did ANYONE really think that Angola would qualify for the 2006 World Cup ahead of respected power Nigeria?

Didn't think so.

Yet the team that could boast of only two African Cup of Nations appearances ('96 & '98) had gotten close in their maiden attempt to qualify for the 1986 World Cup and survived continued civil war & frustration to shock the world by beating out Nigeria on goal differential.

Angola's determination and Akwa's leadership brought
the Palancas Negras to Germany 2006 (ebonet)

THE CURRENT SQUAD

Anogla relies heavily on the goal scoring of Akwa and the overall play of Figueiredo as well as a very tight defense that helped carry them through to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Bottom line: Years of slow but steady ascent have paid off for Angola and they will look to build on their experiences
